Avoid These Mosquito Control Items

Outdoor entertaining season will soon be here in Central Massachusetts.

Mosquito control is of paramount concern when it comes to hosting a great outdoor party.  This is especially true if you are hosting in the evening hours – prime time for most mosquitoes.  Party planning itself comes with lots of decisions.  Don’t make these mistakes when planning for your spring and summer outdoor events this year.

Mosquito protection should be paramount in outdoor party planning.

Avoid tiki torches for Fitchburg mosquito control.

There is something about the ambiance provided by an open flame at an outdoor party.  Fire features in outdoor living are very popular ways to introduce such an attraction in your backyard.  Many residents also choose to adorn their yards with tiki torches for summertime soirees but there are two problems with torches.

avoid tiki torches for mosquito control

Tiki torches offer minimal mosquito control.

First, is unlike a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, tiki torches add multiple unattended open flames to your outdoor environment.  Therein lies the potential for fire accidents.  You never want to use tiki torches for children’s parties, as the risk for injury to kids is far too high with open flame placed throughout your yard.

Additionally, these torches only provide a small amount of mosquito control, repelling mosquitoes only within close proximity.  This presents a paradox as far as mosquito protection is concerned.  It is recommended that party-goers remain at least 36″ away from the torches.  But you will see virtually zero mosquito control benefits unless you are standing close to the torches.

Bug zappers do not provide effective mosquito control.

Here’s the deal with backyard bug zappers.  They might provide a bit of cool light.  They come in decorative casings.  Children of the eighties probably attach the sight, sound, and smell (Ewwwwww!) of bug zappers to many of their summertime memories.  Problem is, they simply do not kill mosquitoes.  They will take care of beetles and flies, but studies have shown that very few mosquitoes ever meet their demise on the surface of a bug zapper.  For other types of insects, sure, but not for mosquitoes.
