Fans for Mosquito Control? A Tale of Mosquito Woe.

Outdoor Fans Will Help Keep Mosquitoes Away, But They Won’t Eliminate Them

Every spring, we add perennials to our front garden to liven it up, add some color, and provide new texture to an otherwise bland area of shrubs in a pine straw bed. This year – for the very first time – we saw a row of primroses at the local nursery. In full bloom, they were so unusual that we bought three pots and decided to give them a trial run. They now hold court at 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock outside the front of our home.

Should you not be familiar with them as I was, they almost look like very tiny wide open tulips, very thin and delicate. After a flower wilts on the plant greenery, simply pinch the spent blossom and make way for a new bud. It’s really cool.

An Invitation To A Cookout Where My Wife Turned Out To Be The Main Course

A few days ago, I was outside pinching the expired blossoms and watering the base of the plants when a couple stopped by my home during their neighborhood walk and asked about the flowers. They were new to them, too.

Within a matter of minutes, we found out that they were Michigan transplants and just returned from their native state with a supply of Kowalski Hot Dogs – a local delicacy up there. Two minutes later, as they were describing how delicious they were – and how they crunched when you bit them due to their thick, natural casing – they invited us to come over for a cookout.

Their backyard open air outdoor room was absolutely beautiful. Right to left, it featured a stone water fall, a sitting area with an outdoor sofa and two overstuffed chairs, and behind that suite a large rectangular outdoor dining table set with four chairs. As we sat in the center of the space, I noticed an oscillating fan operating adjacent to the seating group. It was lovely. Later, I discovered it was a Godsend helping to keep the mosquitoes away.

Toward the end of the meal, our hostess mentioned to her husband that she was “chilly” so he turned the fan off. BIG MISTAKE! Within minutes, the party broke up when the yard became a haven for biting mosquitoes.

Later that evening, while trying to fall asleep, my wife had a mosquito bite welt on her leg that became inflamed and itched her all evening – even after applying several application of cortisone cream.

Here we are two days later and she still has the itching – and the welts. The mosquitoes, no longer blown away by the fan, crunched on her lower ankle as we sat outside – my wife had become dessert for the little monsters.

Professional Mosquito Control Would Have Saved The Evening From Becoming A Bite Fest

Outdoor fans are a minimal, temporary solution for shooing mosquitoes away. And they certainly don’t eliminate them. I told our new friends that if they planned on entertaining out there often – and they do – they need professional Central Mass mosquito control. Treatment – not circulating air – is the best mosquito defense. Ensure that the finest barrier spray treatment you can locate is applied on a regular basis – every 21 days in most Central Massachusetts areas.
