Mosquito control devices tout their ability to effectively repel or kill mosquitoes. You might have been encouraged to purchase one from online retailers, thinking they could be the answer to avoiding mosquito bites outside your home. What can be bad about that? Well, nothing…if they work.

The unfortunate truth about many mosquito control devices, is that they offer anecdotal evidence of controlling mosquitoes at best. They range in cost from $15 for clip-on, refillable repellents to hundreds of dollars for electric or rechargeable devices. The problem is not simply the cost, however. When we purchase products like these, we tend to rule them in without testing first. If you are fortunate enough to not receive mosquito bites once or twice while using a device, you will be inclined to solely depend on that device without using DEET. After all, the devices were created so we don’t have to use yard spray or personal spray for protection, right? Let’s say the device you chose works a few times – or maybe you get lucky and there just are not many mosquitoes around. The next time you use the device, you get inundated with biting mosquitoes. What then? The device gets stored away or thrown away – hello, landfill, good-bye money! Then, it’s back to the drawing board. The chance you just took can affect your health.

Let’s hypothesize for a moment, the mosquito device you chose actually does work.
There are plenty of short-range mosquito control devices on the market. Some say they will repel mosquitoes for up to 20 feet. You have three choices with these devices.
- Stay within 20 feet of the device at all times
- Carry it around with you
- Purchase three, or five, or 10, and place them all over your property
None of these make much sense. Nor does planting mosquito repellent plants or bushes. Neither provides enough protection for you and your family on a large scale.
