Mosquito Control, Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Mosquito control does not end at the property line.

Nor do mosquitoes stay on their side of the fence.  If you have close neighbors, it is important that you maintain an open line of communication about mosquito control and protection.  Here are tips to offer your neighbors and to follow yourself, which can benefit your home and family as well as those around you.

Be neighborly, keep a tidy lawn.

One of the easiest things you and your neighbors can do is practice good lawn maintenance.  Doing so will offer mosquito and tick protection.  This includes cleaning up lawn clippings after mowing, and bagging up leaves.  It is also necessary to not allow garbage, junk, or debris to gather on your property, and collect water.  If you have an irrigation system, have it inspected for leaks and repaired if necessary.

Keep your pool area picked up too.

Many might believe their neighbor’s backyard pool is the main attraction for mosquitoes.  However, it’s not the pool, but pool accoutrements that allow mosquitoes to propagate.  Since pools have pumps that keep the water moving constantly, it is not a great place for a mosquito to lay her eggs.  Pool toys, coolers or cooler lids, and open garbage cans are some of the items that can get overlooked by the pool.  These items can collect water when it rains, and attract mosquitoes.  Additionally, pool covers can become an ideal mosquito egg habitat.  If your pool is non-operational, it is better to remedy the issue than to allow it to sit in disrepair.

Don’t install mosquito-friendly plants close to your neighbor’s property.

I would not recommend planting flowers that attract mosquitoes in the first place, but if you must, don’t plant them at your shared mailbox space or along your shared fence line.  If you want to be a great neighbor, plant items that might repel mosquitoes around your yard to help keep yours and your neighbors’ outdoor spaces safer from mosquitoes.
