What Not to Wear, Mosquito Protection Edition

Perhaps this is not where you think to go to get fashion advice.

As it pertains to mosquito protection, I would like to offer my rendition of What Not to Wear.  This is because just like humans, mosquitoes have their own tastes.  These preferences extend to the type of clothing you wear.  Now that we are in the throes of springtime, and summer is upon us, it is time to consider how to dress NOT to impress mosquitoes when you spend time outdoors this year.

What Not to Wear - Mosquito Protection Edition

You can help protect yourself and your family by choosing the right clothes.

Mosquito protection through clothing color choices.

First, we’ll talk about clothing color.  Recently, I wrote about how the Aedes aegypti mosquito prefers colors, such as red and orange.  Additionally, we know that wearing dark colors makes you a target for mosquitoes.  My first recommendation for what not to wear would be anything black, red, or orange.  This includes color combinations, such as floral patterns.

Mosquito protection begins with color choice.

Clothing types that hamper mosquito protection.

There are a few things that make us more susceptible to mosquito bites as far as the cut of our clothing.  I’ll first say that clothing that leaves more skin exposed is much preferred to hungry female mosquitoes.  This includes shorts, skirts, and short sleeves.  If you are hiking, camping, or attending an outdoor event, know that the more skin that is exposed, the more likely you are to be bitten.  It would be silly to assume that we will not go outdoors with shorts, skirts, or tank tops this summer.  Be sure to try choosing a neutral or light color to make yourself less a target, and consider applying DEET or picaridin mosquito protection to your skin.

Can mosquitoes bite through skinny jeans?

If you choose to wear pants, consider not only wearing a light color, but also pants that are not tight-fitting, such as skinny jeans or leggings.  This is because tight-fitting clothing can be bitten through by mosquitoes.  Additionally, mosquitoes are apt to bite through thin and loosely woven clothing.
